Family Learning

Family learning provides a second opportunity for parents and grandparents to return to learning whilst supporting a child’s education.

The aims of the family learning programmes are to raise the profile of learning in the community, to help raise achievement in schools, build on skills of the local community to assist in regeneration, to provide opportunities for families to learn together, to provide professional support in areas of behavior management, drugs awareness and parenting skills and to build confidence and self esteem.

The Family Learning Centre, East Cowes Primary School
The first centre of its kind on the Island offering courses for parents, carers and grandparents all week long as well as learning together sessions with children.

Other activities offered include Arts workshops, Carnival workshops, Men and Boys activities, Samba and Family Learning Weekend in October each year.
Work-based Family Learning is also being developed.

Parenting Programmes
This is the one job that you don’t have any preparation for. Parenting needs change as children progress from toddler stage to teenage and beyond. We run sessions to help with the tough times and to offer support and encouragement to parents concerning drugs awareness and sex education.

Family Learning goes further than school. Learning is not only about formal lessons; learning within the family makes a vital contribution to the development of communities and supports individuals throughout their lives. Taking part in a learning activity develops confidence and self esteem and leads to a greater involvement in work and community activities.

The Isle of Wight Council funds Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy programmes in Primary and Middle schools around the Island. Our team of teachers and learning support assistants will show you how to make games and resources to support your child’s learning at home

We work in partnership with the Isle of Wight College to offer basic skills support for parents, carers and grandparents too. If you feel that your child is leaving you behind when it comes to helping with homework or that you may wish to return to work as your family get older we can offer a way back to learning to benefit the whole family.
